Use a CFL(the curly ones) with a Kelvin rating of 5000 or 6500. You have to look for it on the box or on the bulb, it can be hard to find on the product, and not every bulb will tell you the Kelvin rating though they all have one, and it will say 5000k or 6500k for a white light. The 6500k is very white. The lower the k, the warmer or yellower light a bulb gives. A normal incandescent is about 2700k. I have some Philips "mini-twisters" that have it in tiny letters on the bottom of the box near the product code. They have 5000 or 6500 on the front of the box but don't say on the front that the number refers to the Kelvin rating. Use the biggest bulb you can fit in the fixture.

If you're using this as a work light, it's better if you can get something that aims straight at the surface you work on, without shining in your eyes. A desk lamp might work, and so might a clamp-on type of work light if you have an appropriate place to clamp it.

Karen L is spot on. I'll just add that the bulbs she is recommending are sometimes marked "Daylight".

Go to Home Depot and take a look at all the different light bulbs. You can get all your questions answered there too. Fluorescent lights are much whiter than incandescents.
